Record Details

22/09/1935 Ranworth Broad; TG3515; Cladium mariscus; E.A. Ellis; E.A. Ellis; "Specimen in Castle Museum, Norwich (NWH) in the Mayfield collection"; NWH: MAY; Lit. cited: 387
; Additional NotesThe following text is from a letter sent by Ted Ellis to Mr. Mayfield on 23rd Sept 1935 (in Mayfield collection at NWH fungarium): A trip to Ranworth Broad yielded a few interesting things including a rust new to Britain and, apparently, to this side of the Atlantic - its nearest station being Bermuda. It is Puccinia cladii Ellis & Tr.. Uredospores were plentiful on Cladium mariscus on the fen bordering Ranworth dyke, and they correspond exactly with the description of this species in Arthur’s Rusts of U.S.A (1934). Note thick walls and dark brown of mature spores. Unfortunately, the rust is attacked severely by Darluca filum. I have sent some to Mr. Grove, and here is yours by the same post, while the material is fresh. Yours sincerely E.A. Ellis
